Mr. Stephen Poloz, an advisory member of Invotek Group, former Governor of the Bank of Canada (2013–2020), and author of The Next Age of Uncertainty: How the World Can Adapt to a Riskier Future, joined students from St. Anne’s School and St. Andrew’s College for an engaging fireside chat on February 6, 2026.
The conversation covered everything from the role of the Bank of Canada and its responsibility as the country’s central bank, to what the Governor actually does on a day-to-day basis. Rather than describing a role filled with constant directives and visible action, Stephen offered a perspective that surprised many in the room.
Referencing a famous leadership philosophy which humorously suggests that the job is often to “do nothing”, Stephen explained that effective leadership is about building a strong team, setting clear direction, and then stepping back. Much of the Governor’s role, he shared, involves listening carefully, observing how the team operates, and allowing talented people to execute. Leadership, at its highest level, is a team effort.
Stephen also reflected on a significant milestone during his tenure: appointing Carolyn Wilkins as the first female Senior Deputy Governor in the Bank’s history. Her appointment marked a historic moment, as she became the first woman to sign her name on a Canadian bill, an enduring symbol of progress and representation in the nation’s financial leadership.
When asked what he hoped students would take away from the discussion, Stephen emphasized the importance of making choices that expand future opportunities rather than narrow them. He strongly encouraged students to first, work hard; second, learn how to learn; and third, read the newspaper daily.
Invotek Group thanks Stephen for investing his time and sharing his experiences with some of the next generation of leaders.
